ALTAMONT, TENNESSEE

COKE OVENS WERE ONCE PART OF AN IMPORTANT INDUSTRIAL OPERATION.TENNESSEE COAL & IRON COMPANY MINED NEARBY. BROUGHT COAL AND IRON TO BE PROCESSED INTO COKE. THE COKE WAS THEN TAKEN TO SOUTH PITTSBURG WHERE IT WAS USED TO PROCESS INTO IRON ORE IN A VALLEY.
